Rangers beat Fenerbahce on penalties to progress

Rangers lost their two-goal first-leg lead but won a thrilling penalty shootout to knock out Jose Mourinho’s Fenerbahce at a bouncing Ibrox.
Despite losing 3-1 in Turkey and escaping another two away goals through marginal offside decisions, Mourinho claimed on the eve of the game his side were a better team than Rangers.
And they won 2-0 on the night. Sebastian Szymański’s superb first-time finish from Filip Kostić’s delivery had reduced the aggregate arrears shortly before half-time, and the winger converted a low Mert Müldür cross in the second half to force an additional 30 minutes.

Jack Butland made two good saves in the added period as the Turkish side looked to be finishing strongly.
But Butland then saved well in the shootout from Fred and Dusan Tadic, before Mert Hakan Yandas blazed his effort over the top to send Barry Ferguson’s men through.
Rangers will now play Athletic Bilbao in the quarter-finals.
A triumphant Butland told TNT Sports: “We are something special. I wanted to put something up for the guys, I wanted to get it done. You can’t top this feeling.
“We fully believed we were going to get the job done. The boys dug deep and this is the reward you get, it’s what the fans deserve.
“We could have been more clinical but, boy, we deserved this.”
