Full list of horses taking part in this year’s race at Aintree

The most high-profile steeplechase on the racing calendar takes place this Saturday on the final day of the Grand National 2025.

A maximum of 34 horses will start the two-lap showpiece at Aintree, reduced for safety reasons from 40 last year, when I Am Maximus triumphed.

The 2024 champion is back this time, as is last year’s Irish Grand National winner, Intense Raffles, with Stumptown and Iroko also among the favourites.

The Willie Mullins-trained, JP McManus-owned I Am Maximus heads the field and is aiming to become the eighth runner to win the Grand National more than once.

When is the Grand National 2025?

The race is on Saturday, April 5 at 16:00 BST, when Mullins will target a third Grand National victory, having first won the race in 2005 with Hedgehunter.

“It was huge to win it last year for the second time,” said Mullins, whose top contender this time has been rated 167 and given a weight of 11st 12lb.

“I felt very spoilt winning a second Grand National. It’s top weight and it’s tough but we had an idea that it would be tough.

“He likes the track. Sometimes when horses go back a second time they don’t like it, and we’ve got all that to take into account.

“Horses go round it once and the second time it can be different, but he had a good experience last year and I’m hoping that it won’t be a problem.”

In the UK, the Grand National 2025 will be shown live on ITV 1 and Racing TV. Coverage on ITV starts at 15:15 and runs until 17:00.

Viewers can stream the action on the go on a vast variety of devices via the ITVX app and ITV.com.

BBC Radio 5 Live will carry radio commentary of the race.

Grand National weather forecast

Aintree will see sunshine for the race, according to the Met Office, which projects a temperature of around 14 degrees and an easterly wind of 11mph.

Visibility will be very good and the going is said to be soft.
