Pittsburg Accepting Applications to Fill City Council Vacancy

PITTSBURG, CA – Pittsburg is looking to fill a vacancy on the City Council resulting from the departure of former Council Member and current Contra Costa County District 5 Supervisor-Elect, Shanelle Scales-Preston.

Following an agendized discussion during the December 16, 2024, City Council meeting, the four remaining Council Members voted unanimously to utilize an application and interview process to appoint a resident of the City to the open seat.

As opposed to holding a special election, which could cost the City’s taxpayers over $700,000, the City Council opted to appoint a member of the public, which is less costly and can be done more expeditiously, minimizing the seat’s vacancy.

“While bittersweet, we are excited about the opportunity to have Supervisor-Elect Scales-Preston representing District 5 in the future. The City Council is hopeful that by appointing someone to this seat, we can quickly fill the vacancy and continue making strides to build the Pittsburg we envision,” said Mayor Jelani Killings.

While generally referenced as a City Council seat, the position would also serve as a member of the Board of the Pittsburg Power Company, the Housing Authority Board, the Pittsburg Arts and Community Foundation, the Southwest Pittsburg Geological Hazard Abatement District II, and the Successor Agency. The application window is open and will close on Thursday, January 2, 2025, at 12:00 pm.

Interviews before the remaining City Council Members will take place during a public meeting on January 6, 2025. Applicants must be a United States citizen 18 years of age or older, a resident of Pittsburg, and a registered voter at the time of application submission. Interested residents can access and submit the application online. For assistance or additional information, please contact the City Clerk’s Office at (925) 252-4804 or [email protected]
