Red card came after ’emotions got the better of me’, says Liverpool boss

Liverpool manager Arne Slot says he wants to “go back” and “do it differently” in the post-match melee that included his dismissal after his side conceded a 98th-minute equaliser in a 2-2 draw at Everton on Monday.

In the final Merseyside derby at the Toffees’ Goodison Park home, Slot was clearly stunned to receive a red card from Michael Oliver after approaching the referee on the pitch and exchanging a handshake.

“During stoppage time, there was a lot that happened and the emotions got the better of me,” said Slot, reflecting on a decisive strike by James Tarkowski that was awarded after a Video Assistant Referee review for offside and a potential foul on Reds defender Ibrahima Konate.

“I would have loved to do it differently if I could go back. I hope to do it differently the next time, as well.”

Arne Slot red card: ‘Respect process’

Slot suggested he had been unhappy that the amount of added time played had gone over the minimum figure announced by officials.

The situation was compounded on Thursday by the Premier League mistakenly announcing that the Dutchman had been given a two-match ban for “offensive, insulting, or abusive language”.

No decision is expected until Oliver’s post-match report has been reviewed, with the options open to the Football Association including a charge against Slot, reminding him of his responsibilities or taking no further action.

“That is an ongoing process now and we have to respect that,” added Slot, who is expected to be in Liverpool’s technical area when they host Wolves in the Premier League on Sunday (2pm GMT). “So I can’t go into the details.”

Liverpool vs Wolves

Midfielder Curtis Jones will be banned at Anfield after being sent off for an altercation with Everton counterpart Abdoulaye Doucoure immediately after the final whistle.

England international Jones was incensed with Doucoure, who was also given his marching orders, for celebrating Everton’s point by goading the Liverpool fans.

Slot said forward Cody Gakpo is “a bit of a doubt” after being substituted through injury, while defender Joe Gomez and midfielder Tyler Morton are out.

Wideman Trent Alexander-Arnold came through 30 minutes on his return from injury and could start as Liverpool seek a first win in three matches in all competitions.

They begin the weekend seven points clear of second-placed Arsenal, who visit third-bottom Leicester City on Saturday (12.30pm).
